A special meeting took place at the Reimer Center as part of the “School Without Walls” (SWW) program, bringing together around 20 young leaders. These young men and women are already actively serving in their communities and will, in the future, shape the new generation amid the challenging reality of modern Ukraine. The meeting became an important milestone in their personal and spiritual formation, laying another solid brick in the foundation of their calling.
The main topic of the meeting was the role of opinion leaders in contemporary society — a theme becoming increasingly relevant in today’s flow of information and constant influence of social media. Participants explored both the positive and negative potential of such influence. It was crucial to realize that opinion leaders can inspire young people toward goodness, growth, and service, but can also mislead them, pursuing their own interests or even promoting destructive ideas.
Special attention was given to the motivation of opinion leaders. What are their true goals: do they genuinely strive to help people and change the world for the better, or are they merely seeking personal fame and gain? This question prompted deep personal reflection among the students about what kind of leaders they aspire to become.
The discussion was lively and profound. Young people actively shared their thoughts, life examples, debated, and sought criteria to recognize a genuine, honest, and trustworthy leader. A large part of the discussion was devoted to social media — a powerful tool of modern influence that can bring both good and harm depending on who uses it and for what purpose.
Sophia, one of the SWW students, shared her impressions: “When I listened to this topic, I realized that social media really does have a strong impact on us. I understood this before, but I hadn’t paid such focused attention. Now I see how important it is to consciously choose who to listen to and whose thoughts to allow to shape my worldview.”
The meeting at the Reimer Center left a strong impression on all participants. It not only helped them better understand the role of leadership in society but also became a source of inspiration and a call to responsibility for future generations. Amidst the war and the challenges facing Ukraine, forming conscious, responsible, and inspired leaders is more important than ever.
