Prayer and Hope: Supporting the Women of Defenders in Zaporizhzhia

In the frontline city of Zaporizhzhia, leaders of SBS continue serving God by responding to society’s urgent needs. Just 45 km to the east, intense fighting is ongoing. For many women, this is the closest distance to their husbands, sons, and brothers who are defending the country. They are not afraid of the war’s proximity but live in constant fear for their loved ones on the front lines.

For this category of people—wives and mothers of soldiers—leaders of SBS organized a second meeting at the Reimer Center, gathering 30 women. Here, they find themselves among like-minded people, those who understand each other’s struggles and pain.

“We are united by pain. We are united by love for our loved ones. We are united by faith and hope that they will return home victorious. We are united in our daily prayers for this to become a reality,” shared Valentyna.

Victor, a former soldier and now a volunteer helping troops, shared his experience:

“Your husbands may not always tell you the truth about what is happening on the front. Or rather, almost never. They deeply need your support. No one can encourage and uplift them like you.”

He spoke about the power of prayer and the miracles soldiers witness, things that cannot be called coincidences.

“I don’t know who prayed for me at that moment, but I know a shell landed just 10 meters away and didn’t explode. I don’t know whose prayers brought me back home after visiting the soldiers on the front line, but I returned to my wife and three daughters,” he shared.

Each woman received a Bible to find comfort, peace, and faith in the One who not only protects but also grants eternal salvation and hope.At the end of the meeting, women wrote their defenders’ names on the Ukrainian flag and shared a heartfelt prayer for their loved ones.To bring some relief, SBS leaders organized a tote bag painting workshop, knowing that art can ease stress and support mental health.

“Thank you for your attention,” said Tetiana, waiting for her son to return from war. “It’s comforting to know that we are remembered and supported.”

Leaders of SBS remain committed to supporting these women, giving them a space to heal and hope while waiting for their loved ones to return home.
