In frontline Zaporizhzhia, where air raid sirens have become part of everyday life, the children’s club gathered once again at Reimer Center. This time about 30 children were not heading to the usual hall but down into the basement. Because of the danger of missile strikes and Shahed drones, the team decided to hold the meeting in a safer place. Yet even the concrete walls could not silence the sound of children’s laughter.
The basement was transformed into a space of joy. Colorful balloons, festive garlands, and smiling volunteers created an atmosphere as if no explosions were echoing outside and the world remained kind and bright. On this day the children celebrated birthdays. Applause filled the room, along with sincere hugs and warm words. For some of the children, it may have been the first birthday in a long time surrounded by so many people and so much support.
One of the most touching moments was the time of singing together. When children and adults stood side by side and sang the club’s favorite songs, the basement seemed to fill with light. The club already has several songs that everyone knows by heart, and they are sung at every meeting. These simple words about hope, faith, and God’s presence help both children and adults walk through difficult days. Singing together united everyone — younger and older, newcomers and those who come every week. In those moments, fear fades and hearts are filled with peace.
The children also prepared cakes, decorating them with cream and adding sweet details with their own hands. They worked carefully in teams. There was a lot of laughter, a bit of spilled flour, sticky fingers, and many joyful faces. But most importantly, they were learning to support one another, celebrate the success of their friends, and share warmth.
The club ended with a shared prayer. The children prayed simply and sincerely — for peace, for their families, and for their city. They are learning to believe in the best even when the world around them feels uncertain. In this basement, something more than a meeting was taking shape — a community where love is stronger than fear.
Despite the tense situation in Zaporizhzhia, life continues. And as long as children sing together and hold on to hope, the light in this city will not fade.
